More Payouts, More at Stake: Treat Every Payout Like the Brand Moment It Is
Payouts have shifted from rare events to recurring touchpoints, and Onbe and NRG's 2026 Payouts Landscape research shows the frequency is rising fast: consumers receiving 5-10 payouts a month have doubled since 2024. But 33% have hit an issue getting paid, and nearly 1 in 10 have had funds sent to the wrong recipient, problems digital disbursements solve far more easily than checks. As payouts become brand moments, speed and security will build trust, while sticking with checks will only add friction.
Payouts used to be rare events. Today, they’re recurring touchpoints that can either build trust or add friction. Onbe and NRG’s 2026 Payouts Landscape research shows that corporate payouts are happening more often across every generation, with real implications for how businesses design their digital disbursements.
Payout frequency is rising
The share of consumers receiving five to 10 payouts a month has doubled, from 9% in 2024 to 18% in 2026. Meanwhile, the share receiving no payouts at all has dropped five points.
Reasons vary by generation – the trend doesn’t
- Boomers and Gen X most often cite rebates (45% and 41%)
- Millennials most often cite bill refunds (42%)
- Gen Z most often cites deposit refunds (45%)
Experience quality is the differentiator
- 33% of consumers have experienced an issue when receiving a payout.
- Nearly 1 in 10 have had a payment sent to the wrong recipient.
- Issues like these are far easier to prevent, track, and resolve with digital disbursements than with checks.
So, why does this matter?
Payouts are now central touchpoints for consumers that shape brand perception. Businesses that deliver funds quickly, securely, and digitally will gain trust, while those sticking with physical methods risk compounding friction with every check.
